Group Trip Questions

What is the most distinguishing feature in each place?
In the woods behind Hume the silence and, the concrete that has been reclaimed by nature and the amount of trash was very distinguishing. I think the whole group felt it was dirtier than expected; still it was serene. In the Reitz Union the amount of humans and volume was distinguishing. Also fairly distinguishing was the sheer size and complexity of the space, stairwells and elevators.

What is the purpose or goal of each place?
The woods are barren, overgrown land. It seems to have no purpose, although there is a small, old wooden bridge so it might have once been a nature trail.
Th Reitz is the UF student union where people can eat, socialize, study and purchase school supplies.

What is the essential quality of each place?
In the woods it seems to be that it is just a place for nature to be incorporated within the campus. The Reitz is a large student union complex designed specifically to allow students to be involved with the school, relax after or between classes, purchase specific supplies, eat, etc. The essential quality or goal of the place to to accommodate students.

How do people react to each place?
Our group didn't have a noticeable reaction to going into the woods besides noting the trash and possibly feeling like we were somewhere where we shouldn’t be, although the trash signifies the presence of past visitors. The Reitz is pretty big and not really given much thought. It seems like people just accept that it’s there and takes it for what it is.

How do you compare the two places?
In comparison I feel like the woods behind Hume and the Reitz offer something for everybody, so I guess you could compare their comfort. The woods is a place to go and hangout if you’re feeling like you want to be outside and seclude yourself in nature. Even with friends, there is a sense of solitude and comfort being surrounded by nature. The Reitz, if you’re their to study, provides many quiet, comfy areas where people can focus and work. It also offers comfort to people who want to hangout and remain on campus; the dining area and the couches are a nice quiet place to also seclude yourself and be comfortable.

What is your definition of natural place and unnatural place?
Natural place: a place that is untouched by the human hand. A pure environment.

Unnatural place: a place where man has made his mark. Something constructed or established by something other than natural forces
