How would the composition change if one or more lines were removed?
The change in composition would rely almost purely upon what the composition was, as certain compositions would be drastically altered if one of its lines were removed, or it might not have a visible change at all. Many of the more minimalist pieces would have much of the subject removed upon discarding of a line.
What happens when you combine flat, solid shapes with gradated shapes? Or fuse negative and positive?
Fusing flat and gradated shapes has the potential to create more cartoon-esque shapes, in which one of the sides is enveloped completely in shadow or highlight in stark contrast to the gradient displayed on some of the other sides. A fusion of negative and positive may result in the creation of a new piece in which all colors are displayed normally or the colors may mix and created an image that looks to have a filter superimposed upon it.
What happens when you invert the values-that is,
the black areas become white and the black areas become black?
The meaning of the piece as a whole will almost definitely alter drastically, whether that change makes for a clearer purpose or an incomprehensible one depends on the piece. Whites and blacks generally represent opposite subjects and themes, thus an inversion can radically affect a piece of art.
Choose an artist's piece from the chapter that you liked and talk about the methods used.
I really liked Just in Time by Elizabeth Murray. The artist created a colossal piece, measuring 8ft by 9ft that is reminiscent of a human head. There are many implications to this piece, which displays the figure and ground in a positive to negative juxtaposition.
