Reading Responses

How would the composition change if one or more lines were removed?

The composition becomes more concentrated and the viewers attention is guided towards the positive spaces left in the composition. The increased negative space hints at clarity.

What happens when you combine flat, solid shapes with gradated shapes? Or fuse negative and positive?

Flat images combined with solid shapes creates a contrast of intensity and volume. Gradated shapes establish form and in juxtaposition with solid shapes, lead to a comparison of soft and hard. Fusing negative and positive can lead to a playful composition that proposes questions of what is left out or marginalized. This use of complimentary elements can create powerful visuals.

What happens when you invert the values-that is, the black areas become white and the black areas become black?

Inverted values reverse the situation and propose alternative interpretations since the colors black and white have rich connotations. Changing them around can mean changing from good to bad, enlightenment to depression etc.

Choose an artist's piece from the chapter that you liked and talk about the methods used.

Elisabeth Murray "Just in Time" 1981. I like the use of free-flowing, natural shapes. I think that the image is a combination of both familiar and unknown. There are corners that remind the viewer of a coffee cup of a leaf and some things are completely abstract.
