Max Eisenberg — Homework April 7

Response to In Defense of the Poor Image:

In Hito Steyerl’s, In Defense of Poor Image, she writes that poor image resolution decreases the inherent value of the work. Images considered to be ‘high quality’ are sold through higher class establishments and distributors. Poor images are distributed through internet memes, DVD’s, broadcasting. There is a slight tone in Hito’s writing, however, that implies that she might not actually believes this. I feel that she believes that images of ‘low quality’ are only viewed as low because the majority of people try to relate art with reality and in doing so consider the image the be poor. But these low quality images are real and many times show a true glimpse into something. Steyerl writes “The poor image is no longer about the real thing…it is about reality.” The high image, although preferable, is just an illusion; a constructed moment.
