Which will work better in your design, a limited or wide range of hues?

In trying to create a contemporary self portrait piece about myself I would enjoy seeing a wide range of hues to express the range and dynamism of my own interests.
                            What happens when your composition is dominated by earth colors and chromatic grays? How does it change when an intense color is added?

When a composition is dominated by earth colors and chromatic grays the emotional connection to a piece can be lost as the audience is brought down to a more drab sense of existence. An intense color has the potential to stir emotion and thought in an audience.
                            What are the differences in use of color in Andrew Wyeth's Wind from the Sea and Richard Diebenkorn's Interior with Book?

Andrew Wyeth's Wind from the Sea uses color to create an easily understood and relatable image of a novel moment and grace in motion. The scene is intimate yet stark. In Richard Diebenkorn's Interior with Book, the scene is striking in its use of friendly, upbeat inviting colors and easygoing perspective.
