Homework 01/20/15

HW: Read Ch. 2 The Element of Color
Post response of reading on blog and answer following
Which will work better in your design, a limited or wide range of hues?
    • Whether a designer uses a limited or wide range of hues depends on the design, and what the artist is trying to portray. A wide range of hues will work better to “capture the richness of reality”, because more detail can be shown. A limited range of hues will work better for an “electric visual impact”, because there aren’t as many colors competing for your attention.
What happens when your composition is dominated by earth colors and chromatic grays? How does it change when an intense color is added?
    • When a composition is dominated by earth colors and chromatic grays, the composition has a sense of unity. Earth colors bring a composition warmth and chromatic grays are subtle, yet vibrant. If an intense color is added to the composition, it can provide a nice balance between the delicate earth tones or chromatic grays and the loud, intense color.
What are the differences in use of color in Andrew Wyeth's Wind from the Sea and Richard Diebenkorn's Interior with Book?

    • In Andrew Wyeth’s painting, he uses subtle browns and greens, which make the image look like a photograph from the nineteenth century. The image seems peaceful and relaxing. In Richard Diebenkorn’s painting, he uses bright colors for the landscape, and solid blue for the interior of the room. This creates an illusion that the landscape is coming at you.
