Chapter 2

Which will work better in your design, a limited or wide range of hues?

  • A wide range of hues will work better in my design because it will portray a more lively image instead of a flat one.
What happens when your composition is dominated by earth colors and chromatic grays? How does it change when an intense color is added?

  • When a composition is dominated by earth colors and chromatic grays, it appears dull, subtle, and neutral. A composition with these colors are not meant to be the focus of attention. When an intense color is added, it becomes the main focus since it stands out from the rest of the neutral colors.
What are the differences in use of color in Andrew Wyeth's Wind from the Sea and Richard Diebenkorn's Interior with Book?

  • Andrew Wyeth uses earth-tones that mimic a sepia photograph from the 19th century. It evokes a calm, serene vibe throughout the piece. Diebenkorn, on the other hand, uses bright colors which gives his painting more life. His use of saturated colors and blocking give the image a certain depth and energy creating a tension between the yellow/orange and the blues.
