Readings and In-Process Work 1-20-15

Chapter 2 Response

Which will work better in your design, a limited or wide range of hues?
I think my design would work better with a limited range of hues for my earthy/natural concept. A wide range of hues would be distracting because it would give my design a rainbow effect that would make it difficult for the eye to focus.

What happens when your composition is dominated by earth colors and chromatic grays? How does it change when an intense color is added?
Having a composition dominated by earth colors and chromatic grays, work evokes a passive feeling, but it can be used to unify a work. When intense color is added they create a balance between the different intense colors in conjunction with the earthly colors.

What are the differences in use of color in Andrew Wyeth's 'Wind from the Sea' and Richard Diebenkorn's 'Interior With Book?'
Wyeth’s painting uses earthly colors to create a slow pace and serenity in the setting. The sepia color palette makes his painting similar to an old photo.
Diebenkorn uses vivid colors next to each other creates tension and power. Space is established between the objects and setting with the positioning of the colors.

Chapter 1 Response

How would the composition change if one or more lines were removed?
Depending on the image the composition could look unbalanced or incomplete. The focal point would also shift in a different direction either forward or deeper in the image. Lastly the over direction of movement within the composition would be effected.

What happens when you combine flat, solid shapes with gradated shapes? Or fuse negative and positive?
When you combine these shapes a sense of depth and dimension with space and light through the difference between the qualities of the shapes. Fusing negative and positive shapes equally draws attention to both spaces. The negative space that would normally read as a void would read as something significant due to its presences next to the positive space.

What happens when you invert the values-that is, the black areas become white and the black areas become black?
Inverting the values causes the image to become confusing because the strong difference between the back and white although the lines/proportions of the image would stay the same.

Choose an artist's piece from the chapter that you liked and talk about the methods used.
I liked the images from Charles Cohen. With the use of the negative space or the void his images creates an emotional response of a void but is contradicted with the positive space. This change in representation also changes the context of the image. He does this in a manor that alters the actual photo by removing people or doors and windows.
