Chapter 2

Which will work better in your design, a limited or wide range of hues?

Personally, I think my work looks better with limited hues, because it allows the viewer to focus on the subject and meaning rather than the colors.

What happens when your composition is dominated by earth colors and chromatic grays? How does it change when an intense color is added?

A work done in earth tones and neutrals draws attention away from the color and gives the piece a subtle mood. When you add an intense color, the mood hits you in the face and becomes the focus.

What are the differences in use of color in Andrew Wyeth's Wind from the Sea and Richard Diebenkorn's Interior with Book?

Wyeth uses neutral colors, which creates a very rustic look, whereas Diebenkorn's intense blues and electric greens create a pervading sadness in the piece, and invoke a more modern feeling.
